Christmas, in July.

In Australia, we know when it is winter,
because we know that it is cold,
and we know that there is not that much to do outdoors, when it is cold.

What some might not know,
is that there are very few, free things to do, indoors or outdoors when it is winter.
and that is the stark reality for our homeless.

Earlier this year I committed myself to creating a print version of iLocal®, a booklet that contained information regarding as many free services and events within walking distance of the Perth CBD as I could find.

This booklet was designed specifically for those in need. Those in the vulnerable position of having nowhere to live and no roof over their head. Most with nowhere to go, and nothing to do. Most with nothing expected of them, and therefore, nowhere to be. And most of all, nowhere to belong.

I started distributing this publication in time for the month of February, 2026, and anticipated printing a new edition each month. What I failed to anticipate, was what would happen when winter struck.

From February through to May I was able to find anywhere from 8 to 20 free and fun activities per month right in the heart of Perth city; events that could provide crucial opportunities for social engagement for those who are too often excluded.

However, in May this year, I found myself hopelessly searching for free activities to include in the June edition of iLocal®. One of the only events I could find that felt like it may be of interest was the City of Perth Library’s ‘Winter Film Club’, held once a month, indoors, for the duration of winter, the rest were held by Holy Grounds Cafe both requiring reserved tickets, and so I did not go to print in June.

July was much the same, however, in the spirit of the Australian custom of Christmas in July, I decided to run a campaign and distribute some winter warmth regardless.

The intent: to provide warmth, belonging, and generosity, right in the middle of the coldest season.
